Tonnage steady, boxes down sharply — that was Trieste's 2025. The north-eastern Italian port (IT TRS) handled about 60 million tonnes overall, up 0.7 percent, while container throughput fell 19 percent to 681,733 TEU as carriers reshuffled services from the second half of the year following the end of the 2M alliance; together with Monfalcone the eastern Adriatic port system passed 64 million tonnes. The tonnage rests on heavy RoRo traffic with Turkey and on crude oil pumped through the Transalpine Pipeline to refineries in Bavaria and Austria. Boxes are worked at Trieste Marine Terminal on Molo VII, while the planned Molo VIII received 206.9 million euros of first-phase funding from Italy's CIPESS committee in November 2024, designed around an 860-metre quay with depths to 17.2 metres, able to take vessels of 15,000 to 24,000 TEU. The consortium of Icop, HHLA PLT Italy and Logistica Giuliana puts first-phase capacity at between 200,000 and 500,000 TEU depending on the project document, targeted for 2027. As the southern end of the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor, Trieste runs daily block trains to Austria, southern Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, with a rail share well above the Italian average. Its historic free-port status permits customs-advantaged storage and processing of non-EU goods, letting importers defer duties until goods are called off. For Asian cargo bound for central and southern Europe the Adriatic routing saves several sailing days over the North Range, and when capacity or schedules do not fit, Koper and Rijeka are the obvious fallbacks.
