Steel coils today, mixed cargo tomorrow: that is the plan behind the dock rebuild at Tri-City Port in Granite City, Illinois, the inland barge port on the Mississippi marketed as America's Central Port. The Tri-City Regional Port District is extending its Granite City Harbor general cargo dock to 1,210 feet, long enough for six barges at once, in a 4.55 million dollar project backed by a 4.14 million dollar Port Infrastructure Development grant from MARAD, aiming to lift that dock's throughput from roughly 20,000 to 200,000 tons a year. The district spans about 1,200 acres across Granite City, Madison and Venice, just upriver from St. Louis, and is a river barge facility rather than a seaport; no UN/LOCODE is assigned to the site. Across public general-cargo, steel, dry-bulk and liquid terminals it moves more than 3 million tons annually by barge, rail and truck, handling some 2,500 barges: grain and farm products, steel, soda ash, fertiliser, scrap, coal, ores and liquid and dry bulk. Lock No. 27 and the Chain of Rocks Canal connect it to the full Mississippi system down to the Gulf of Mexico. Container line or ocean-going traffic is not confirmed here — ocean boxes move by rail via Chicago or Memphis, or by barge toward New Orleans, where customs clearance for sea freight takes place.
