Grain and farm products, steel, soda ash, fertiliser, scrap, coal, ores and liquid and dry bulk move across the public docks of the Tri-City Regional Port District, marketed today as America's Central Port. Spanning about 1,200 acres across Granite City, Madison and Venice, Illinois, just upriver from St. Louis, this is an inland barge port on the Mississippi rather than a seaport. It moves more than 3 million tons a year by barge, rail and truck and handles roughly 2,500 barges annually through general-cargo, steel, dry-bulk and liquid terminals. Its position beside Lock No. 27 and the Chain of Rocks Canal links it to the entire Mississippi system down to the Gulf of Mexico. Container line or ocean-going traffic is not confirmed here. Ocean boxes typically move by rail to Chicago or Memphis, or by barge toward New Orleans.
