Around 6.8 million tonnes of cargo and some 59,000 TEU pass through Townsville each year, making it Northern Australia's largest container and automotive port. Dry bulk dominates at roughly 70% of trade – mineral concentrates and ores, fertiliser, sugar, cement, sulphur and coking coal – while containers account for just under 10%. Refined metals from the Glencore copper refinery and Sun Metals zinc refinery supply more than half of the containerised exports. A berth depth of about 11 m accommodates larger bulkers and container vessels. From 2026 an AUD 1.6 billion programme is widening and deepening the channels for ships up to 8,500 TEU. Road and rail link the port to the North Queensland interior, though Brisbane remains the principal container gateway for larger volumes.
