Set on South Korea's east coast about 300 km from Seoul, Donghae (formerly Tonghae) is the largest port in the country's east, with enough depth and little tidal range for large vessels and recent first container traffic. Its principal cargoes are break-bulk cement, soft coal, limestone, gypsum and ferro-alloys, fed by the adjacent Ssangyong cement plant and a major ferro-alloy works for export to China, Japan and Russia. The Mukho section adds an international passenger terminal, where the DBS ferry links Donghae with Vladivostok in Russia and Sakaiminato in Japan. Road and rail connect the port inland across Gangwon Province. For containerised shipments, Busan in the south remains Korea's decisive gateway, with Pohang and Ulsan as nearer industrial alternatives.
