Part of the Shunan–Tokuyama industrial belt in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Tonda is a working bulk and general-cargo port on the southern coast of Honshu. Sheltered by breakwaters, it specialises in salt, cement and general cargo rather than containerised liner trade. Its cargo quays offer depths of roughly 4.9 to 6.1 m, while deeper berths can take vessels of up to about 50,000 dwt; pilotage is advisable and tug assistance is available. Unloading gear and open storage yards are geared to dry and bulk commodities serving the local chemical and building-materials plants. Road and rail links carry goods into the Yamaguchi hinterland. Shippers with container or international requirements use the larger nearby ports of Tokuyama-Kudamatsu, Iwakuni or Hiroshima.
