Around 11.3 million short tons of cargo moved through Toledo in 2024 across 13 terminals, making this Maumee River port on Lake Erie one of the busiest dry-bulk gateways on the Great Lakes. Iron ore alone accounted for about 5.9 million short tons, up 4% on 2023, feeding Cleveland-Cliffs' hot-briquetted-iron plant at the Ironville terminal, which imports more than two million tonnes of feedstock a year and anchors Toledo in the American steel supply chain. Grain from The Andersons, Bunge and ADM, coal, road salt, aluminium, petcoke and project cargo round out the traffic, and 2024 set a record for aluminium throughput. Seaway draft caps depth at about 8 m, so Toledo is built for lakers and smaller ocean ships rather than large container vessels, with onward distribution by CSX rail and the interstate network into Ohio and the Midwest. For containerised overseas freight, Montreal or the New York/New Jersey area remain the practical gateways, while Toledo's strength is bulk and project-cargo handling.
