**UN/LOCODE:** MG TLN

**GPS:** -25.0333, 47.0000

At around 15.75 m alongside, the deep-water Port d'Ehoala — opened in 2009 about 10 km from Tolanaro (UN/LOCODE MG TLN, also Taolagnaro/Fort-Dauphin) in southern Madagascar — is built for mineral sands. It ships ilmenite, plus zirsill and monazite, from the Rio Tinto/QMM operation to RTIT plants in Canada and to customers worldwide. As a multifunctional public port, Ehoala also handles general cargo and occasional cruise calls alongside its mineral exports. The old open roadstead, with just 1.8 m of pier depth, no longer matters for modern trading vessels. Hinterland access is mainly by road, as the rail network does not reach this far south. Container liner traffic for Madagascar runs chiefly through Toamasina (Tamatave) on the east coast.
