Grain, dairy products and sugar beet from the fertile Tokachi plain are the cargo behind the Port of Tokachi at Hiroo on Hokkaido's Pacific coast (UN/LOCODE JP TOK, also Hiroo). As the region's only seaport, it concentrates agricultural exports and imports such as animal feed, with roughly 2,500 m of quay length and storage and handling equipment geared to farm produce. It mainly works general-cargo and bulk vessels; there is no large international container terminal here. Inland links run by road and rail across the Tokachi subprefecture. Forwarders with agribulk and breakbulk are well served. For FCL containers, the Hokkaido box hub of Tomakomai is the practical choice, with Kushiro as a further option.
