MICTSL, a subsidiary of global terminal operator ICTSI, runs the container terminal at Toamasina under a concession extended in 2025 through to 2040, making this Madagascar's principal seaport on the Indian Ocean. Inland connections to the capital Antananarivo rely on the RN2 trunk road and the rail line via Moramanga onto the central highlands. The deep new quay positions the port for larger mainline and feeder calls in the southwest Indian Ocean. For cargo not routed directly through Madagascar, transshipment hubs such as Port Louis in Mauritius or Pointe des Galets in Réunion offer regional alternatives.
