MICTSL, a subsidiary of global terminal operator ICTSI, runs the container terminal at Toamasina under a concession extended in 2025 through to 2040, making this Madagascar's principal seaport on the Indian Ocean. The facility handles roughly 400,000 TEU a year and channels import and export flows for almost the entire Malagasy economy across its existing 290-metre main berth. A USD 639 million expansion — about USD 411 million from Japan's JICA and USD 227 million from the Government of Madagascar — is adding a new 756-metre berth with 16 metres of draught, ship-to-shore gantry cranes and extra yard capacity, enabling vessels of up to around 14,000 TEU. Exports centre on vanilla, cloves, coffee, lychees, textiles and chromite, while imports cover consumer goods, rice, fuels and capital equipment. Customs clearance runs through Madagascar's customs administration, with Toamasina acting as the country's main entry point for containerised cargo. Inland connections to the capital Antananarivo rely on the RN2 trunk road and the rail line via Moramanga onto the central highlands. For cargo not routed directly through Madagascar, transshipment hubs such as Port Louis in Mauritius or Pointe des Galets in Réunion offer regional alternatives.
