Once a Soviet Arctic boomtown of 12,000, Tiksi today counts about 4,000 residents and a port working far below its former scale. Set on the Laptev Sea east of the Lena delta and above the Arctic Circle, it functions as a transfer point where sea cargo is reloaded onto river-going vessels bound for settlements along the Lena.
