Topping 10 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 — including grain above 4.9 million tonnes and potash over 1.2 million tonnes — Thunder Bay (CA THU) ranks among the busiest bulk ports on the Great Lakes. The 2026 season has opened exceptionally strong: July 2026 saw more than 1.32 million tonnes, a modern monthly record, with year-to-date volumes running roughly 10 percent ahead of the prior year; the typical summer grain lull is not occurring, driven by strong Prairie harvest carry-over and solid potash demand. Sitting at the western end of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway, the port gathers Prairie wheat, canola and other grains in a cluster of elevators and loads them onto lakers and ocean vessels heading east. Two dry-bulk terminals also export Saskatchewan potash — the only potash loading facilities on the entire Seaway system. Coal, general and project cargo move through the Keefer Terminal. Transcontinental rail (CN, CP) and the Trans-Canada Highway tie the port to Western Canada's interior. It is not a container port; boxed cargo routes via Montreal or the West Coast ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Operations are seasonal, since the Seaway closes for ice from roughly January to March.
