QSL, together with the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority, runs the St. Lawrence Seaway wharves 5 and 6 that form Thorold's cargo footprint on the Welland Canal in Ontario. Some 55 acres of land handle and store dry bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, but no scheduled container line calls here. The canal links Lake Ontario with Lake Erie and, as part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, carries roughly 40 million tonnes a year on about 3,000 vessels. Iron ore, grain and coal dominate regional flows, while a 7.9 m berth depth and Seaway draft limits set the size of callers. For forwarders, Thorold is most useful for heavy-lift and bulk consignments rather than containerised freight, which moves through Montreal or nearby Hamilton. Winter closures, when the Seaway freezes, should be factored into any sailing plan.
