ThPA, Hellenic Train and Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) signed a memorandum on 7 April 2026 to build a rail freight corridor centred on Thessaloniki (GR SKG), Greece's second container port and the main maritime gateway to the Balkans, which handled about 566,000 TEU in 2024 (up 9 percent) and set a fresh container record in 2025. The port lies on the Thermaic Gulf in northern Greece, roughly 500 road kilometres from Athens, and serves North Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria as much as its own hinterland. Its 195.6 million euro Pier 6 expansion is reported by ThPA management to be on schedule for completion in 2029, more than doubling container capacity from about 650,000 to 1.5 million TEU and allowing ultra-large vessels of up to 24,000 TEU. Cargo covers containers and reefers for regional agricultural produce, breakbulk, dry bulk and project loads; softer conventional volumes in 2026 are being offset by higher-margin special cargoes. Rail along Pan-European Corridor X toward Belgrade and Central Europe carries much of the inland traffic, backed by the motorway network. Customs and transit clearance for the landlocked western Balkans is well established and the port's real competitive edge. For large Aegean transhipment volumes Piraeus remains the alternative, while Bar or Rijeka are options for Serbia-bound cargo routed via the Adriatic.
