Silicon and microsilica define the traffic at Thamshavn (listed in the database as Thamshamm), the port of Orkanger in Trøndelag, about 40 km south-west of Trondheim. This is essentially a works port for Elkem's smelter, running since 1931: inbound raw materials such as quartzite and carbon sources, outbound finished silicon and microsilica. The plant turns out around 50,000 tonnes of silicon a year for the chemical and aluminium industries. Container lines and conventional general cargo are not based here, and the deep approach of over 20 metres serves industrial supply rather than merchant handling. For containerised shipments in the Trøndelag region, Trondheim is the nearest suitable port.
