Crude oil, gasoline, diesel, ethanol and intermediate chemicals make up the working cargo of Texas City, one of the larger ports on the US Gulf Coast by tonnage. Set on the south-western shore of Galveston Bay in Texas, it exists to serve the surrounding refining and petrochemical industry, with Marathon running one of the largest refineries in the United States here. More than 1,000 deep-draft vessels and some 4,150 inland barges call each year, the port tightly integrated with the Union Pacific and BNSF rail networks. Containers are not part of the picture.
