A new sea lock — among the largest in the world at 427 metres long, 55 wide and 16.44 deep — reshaped access to Terneuzen (NL TNZ): opened in October 2024 and fully operational since August 2025, it lets neo-Panamax vessels up to 366 metres sail straight in from the North Sea. The port sits on the south bank of the Western Scheldt at the mouth of the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal and forms part of North Sea Port, the cross-border authority linking the Dutch Zeeland terminals with Ghent in Belgium. Its business is overwhelmingly industrial: liquid and dry bulk, chemicals tied to Dow's local complex — whose ethylene cracker of about 1.5 million tonnes a year is among Europe's largest — plus fertilisers, agribulk and breakbulk, complemented by a modest container terminal and RoRo berths. Dow is also investing some €300 million (2024–2027) in circular plastics and lower-carbon processes at the site. Road, rail and inland barge connect cargo to the Dutch–Belgian hinterland and the German Ruhr region. Forwarders moving pure deep-sea container volumes will still favour nearby Rotterdam or Antwerp, while Terneuzen earns its place with chemicals, bulk and project cargo.
