Long overshadowed by neighbouring Palermo, Termini Imerese has been carving out its own cargo role on Sicily's northern coast, most recently with a container terminal that opened in June 2025. Sitting about 38 km east of Palermo and sharing the same Western Sicily Port Authority, it handles RoRo traffic within the Motorways of the Sea network plus general cargo, while the ENEL pier some 1.7 nautical miles east receives fuel oil for the local power station. The new 40,000 m² terminal, served by three quays with 8–12 m depths, is intended to relieve congestion at Palermo and redistribute freight. Annual throughput stands at roughly 1.19 million tonnes across about 940 vessel calls. The former Fiat industrial site gives the port space and links to the A19 motorway and the Sicilian rail network toward Catania. For mainline container services Palermo remains the primary call, with Catania the east-coast alternative.
