Operated by the state group SERPORT, Ténès is a modest multi-purpose port in Algeria's Chlef province, on the western Mediterranean coast. It handles general cargo, dry and liquid bulk and a small volume of containers, with annual traffic around 428,000 tonnes and roughly 143 TEU. The harbour is formed by a single basin behind a mole extending some 500 m from shore, with a small fishing harbour in its north-east corner and a western entrance that can be hazardous in bad weather. Vessels are accepted up to about 128 m length and 7.2 m draught, so Ténès is geared to smaller coastal tonnage rather than mainline ships. Cereals and bulk from the agricultural hinterland make up much of the export traffic, moved inland by road. For container-line services or larger volumes, Mostaganem, Algiers and Oran are the more capable alternatives.
