As the main port on the west coast of Sumatra, Teluk Bayur at Padang (formerly Emmahaven) is built around the bulk commodities of its hinterland. Its leading trade is crude palm oil, with CPO throughput reaching some 2.57 million tonnes in 2015, alongside coal, cement and clinker, plus rubber and fertiliser. Operated by Pelindo, the port offers six berths totalling about 900 metres of quay, seven cranes and alongside depths of around 12.5 metres, allowing several vessels to work at once. A dedicated container terminal of roughly 46,886 m² complements this largely bulk-and-liquid profile. Road and rail links carry cargo to and from the mountainous interior of West Sumatra. For pure deep-sea container traffic, Belawan in the north and the Jakarta-area ports remain the larger options, but for West Sumatran palm oil, coal and cement Teluk Bayur is the obvious choice.
