2,098,255 TEU in 2024 — no Turkish container facility moved more than Asyaport at Tekirdag (TR TEK) on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara. Opened in 2015 near Barbaros as a greenfield terminal, it is run by Terminal Investment Limited, the terminal arm of Mediterranean Shipping Company, and works mainly as a transshipment hub consolidating cargo for the Black Sea via the Bosphorus. A 400-metre quay extension under construction is set to double annual capacity to about 4 million TEU by the end of 2026. Asyaport was also the first Turkish port to supply shore power to container vessels: an 8 MVA system at 6,600 V and 60 Hz across five plug stations, live since October 2024, had served 47 ships and delivered over 2.5 million kWh by late 2025, while 3,020 solar panels cover roughly 6 percent of electricity demand. The neighbouring Akport terminal adds four berths (about 1,368 m of quay, depths of 8–14 m) for breakbulk, dry bulk, containers, roll-on/roll-off and project cargo, plus a dedicated silo pier for grain; across the complex some twelve berths offer drafts up to 18 metres. Roughly 125 km west of Istanbul, the port takes pressure off the congested Bosphorus corridor and offers an alternative to the terminals around the Gulf of Izmit. Thrace, the farming region behind the port, ships commodities such as flax and sunflower seeds through the quays; inland connections are mainly by road, and a direct rail link into the container terminal is not confirmed. Customs clearance follows Turkish customs law, and for pure deep-sea container calls Tekirdag competes with Ambarli and Gemlik, while remaining a well-established choice for RoRo and project loads.
