Shipbuilding has shaped Tegal (ID TEG) since at least 1961, when early private yards established the town as a construction centre on Java's north coast. Managed today by Pelindo Regional 3, the port still revolves around shipyards — PT Sarana Bahtera operates graving docks of around 15,000 dwt — and a large fishing fleet. Loading and discharge are largely confined to coastal trade and fisheries; no regular liner container service or substantial customs operation is established here. Shallow water and an open-roadstead character further limit vessel sizes. For forwarders Tegal is thus a shipbuilding and fishing hub rather than a freight gateway. Containerised consignments and international import-export traffic for the region are handled through Semarang and its Tanjung Emas deep-sea port, about 100 km east with road and rail links.
