A bulk port that is quietly becoming a container port too — that is the shortest way to describe Teesport (GB TEE) in 2026. In August 2026 operator PD Ports passed 150,000 containers in a single calendar year for the first time, up from roughly 80,000 a year just two and a half years earlier. The port at the mouth of the River Tees on the North Sea moves around 28 million tonnes annually, ranks sixth in England and is the only major UK port exporting more than it imports, with bulk at about 73 percent: iron ore, coal, biomass, agribulk and steel across facilities such as Redcar Bulk Terminal, whose deep-water quay was upgraded in 2025/26 for loads up to 3,500 tonnes. PD Ports invested £15 million in three electric Liebherr LPS 550 bulk-handling cranes, the third commissioned in May 2026. Boxes are handled at TCT1 (294 m) and TCT2 (360 m), where CMA CGM calls; an expansion under way lifts capacity from 235,000 to 450,000 TEU against a port-wide target of at least 650,000 TEU, with autonomous horizontal-transport vehicles tendered for TCT2 from 2026. In September 2026 Teesport received 5,000 Chery vehicles — including the first 1,300 Lepas plug-in hybrids to enter the UK market — confirming its role as a vehicle-import gateway for northern England. Teesport anchors the Teesside Freeport, the UK's largest, while the planned Teesport Offshore Gateway — berths up to one kilometre long, 16 m water depth, over 300 acres — targets offshore-wind logistics for Crown Estate Round 6 projects. Rail links and the A19/A66 motorways give intermodal reach to northern England, the Midlands and Scotland; shippers needing denser liner networks and larger container volumes compare Teesport with Felixstowe or Southampton.
