Crude oil was the only cargo ever to cross Tazerka Oil Terminal (TN TAT) — an offshore loading point in Tunisia's Gulf of Hammamet, not a conventional quay, and today essentially inactive. From 1982 the Tazerka field was produced by Shell Tunirex with AGIP and state company ETAP through a floating production and storage unit (FPSU) that pumped crude straight into tankers, but production was shut down in 1999 on economic grounds. There were never any container berths, warehouses or customs facilities for general freight. Later satellite fields such as Maamoura and Baraka fed the associated onshore facility near Nabeul, yet their production is currently shut in as well. For forwarders the site is therefore unsuitable for container, reefer or breakbulk cargo: boxes route via Radès (Tunis), while bulk and general cargo move through Sfax or Bizerte.
