With roughly 150,000 TEU handled each year, Tawau (MY TWU) ranks as the second-busiest port on Sabah's east coast after Sandakan. Operated by Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, the multipurpose facility moves bulk palm oil through dedicated liquid-loading berths, alongside crude oil, timber and general cargo. Its position close to Kalimantan supports limited border trade with Tarakan in Indonesia. Mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers and reefer points allow container, bulk and breakbulk handling, while warehouses and open yards buffer agricultural and timber consignments. For forwarders the port is the natural outlet for the region's palm-oil exports and a workable call for East Malaysian general cargo. Deep-sea mainline services and larger container volumes, however, are usually routed via the Sepanggar deep-water terminal at Kota Kinabalu.
