Tartus, Syria's second-largest seaport, entered a new era in November 2025 when DP World assumed operations under a 30-year concession agreement, with a planned total investment of around USD 800 million. Three new mobile harbour cranes procured immediately after handover are increasing cargo-handling capacity by 40 per cent, with nine additional, more powerful cranes to arrive in 2027 and early 2028. Ongoing works include dredging of access channels, basins and berths, rehabilitation and replacement of existing handling equipment, and deployment of DP World's proprietary digital platforms to boost efficiency and customer service. The port is being developed to handle general cargo, containers, breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off traffic, significantly expanding Syria's trade options. Latakia remains the alternative call for bulk cargo and grain imports in the region.
