Calling Tartus a major container gateway would overstate it: Syria's second port after Latakia handles only around 20,000 containers a year against a total throughput capacity of roughly four million tonnes. Following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, the new government cancelled Russian conglomerate Stroytransgaz's 49-year lease, and in 2025 the UAE's DP World took over a multipurpose terminal with a stated US$800 million investment plan. The Mediterranean port has traditionally exported Syrian phosphate and handled breakbulk and dry bulk. The section long used as a Russian naval base is meanwhile being wound down. Road links serve the hinterland toward Homs, while the war-damaged rail network offers only limited capacity. For dependable container services, Latakia, the Lebanese ports of Beirut and Tripoli, or Mersin in Turkey are practical alternatives.
