Set on Siantan Island in the remote Anambas archipelago of Indonesia's Riau Islands, Terempa (also spelled Tarempah) is the regency's administrative seat and principal harbour. The port is built around inter-island and coastal trade: Pelni vessels and small freighters land consumer goods, fuel and building materials and load fish and local produce. It is not a confirmed international container or customs gateway — although the Anambas lie near the Natuna Sea gas fields, that offshore supply chain runs through separate bases. Containerised imports and export clearance are better routed through the larger hubs of Tanjung Pinang and Batam. Local distribution depends on Siantan's island road network.
