Twenty minutes across the water — that is what the Tarbert ferry saves shippers and travellers who would otherwise drive some 137 kilometres around the Shannon Estuary. Located on the Kerry shore, Tarbert is the southern ramp of the Shannon Ferries roll-on/roll-off service to Killimer in County Clare, worked by the vessels Shannon Dolphin and Shannon Breeze. The crossing carries cars, coaches and accompanied trucks rather than containers or general cargo. The town also retains a jetty from its now-closed oil-fired power station, but no commercial cargo operation is established here. Deep-water estuary trade — bulk and breakbulk — is handled upriver by the Shannon Foynes Port Company at Foynes. For containers, bulk or customs clearance, forwarders should look to Foynes and Limerick rather than Tarbert. Road access follows the N69 along the southern bank.
