Steel is once again driving Taranto: on Italy's Ionian coast the port is set to handle over 16.5 million tonnes in 2025, up from 12.1 million in 2024, as production recovers at the Acciaierie d'Italia works (the former ILVA). Freight jumped 37.6 percent in the first quarter of 2025, led by dry bulk for the steelworks, whose output is projected at 3.5 to 4 million tonnes in 2025 against about 2 million in 2024; Eni's energy flows add further volume. The mill moves iron ore, coal and finished steel across its own deep-draught terminal. Alongside it, Turkey's Yilport has run the San Cataldo Container Terminal since 2019, sized for around 2 million TEU with expansion toward 4 million by 2028, and operating almost entirely on transhipment — relaying boxes from eastern Mediterranean and Asian services onto feeders rather than importing them into Italy. New RoRo traffic in new vehicles has been added since late 2024. Five rail tracks and motorway reach Bari and northern Italy, with containers about 30 hours from Central Europe, though the catchment is thinner than the Tyrrhenian corridor's. For cargo bound for southern Italy, Naples or Salerno are often more direct; for pure Mediterranean transhipment, compare Taranto with Gioia Tauro. The ongoing sale process for Acciaierie d'Italia remains the key uncertainty for future volumes.
