From 1908 to 1988 Tarakohe (NZ TKH) shipped out cement from the Golden Bay works that built it; today its role is very different. Run by the Tasman District Council, the Golden Bay port now centres on fishing, mussel aquaculture and recreational boating, handling around 7,000 tonnes of harvested mussels a year plus dolomite barged from the Mt Burnett quarry. It is not equipped for containers or liner freight, and depths are modest (cargo berth around 6.4 m). For commercial cargo in the Nelson-Tasman region, shippers use the far larger Port Nelson. Tarakohe is best understood as a specialised fishing and aquaculture harbour with limited general-cargo relevance.
