A river channel of only about 4.9 metres sets the limits at Tanjungredeb: this is a barge port, not a deep-sea terminal. The town is the seat of Berau Regency in East Kalimantan and stands on the Segah River, the artery by which PT Berau Coal moves its output toward the coast. Tugs then haul the loaded barges to transshipment anchorages such as Muara Pantai in the Celebes Sea, where the coal is lifted onto ocean-going bulk carriers. Containerised or international general-cargo traffic is not handled here. Forwarders with box shipments for East Kalimantan are better served by Samarinda or Balikpapan.
