Where many ports balance passengers and freight, Tanjungpinang (IDTNJ) leans almost entirely toward people: its Sri Bintan Pura terminal is the main passenger gateway of Bintan. Several daily fast ferries connect it with Singapore (Tanah Merah and HarbourFront), Batam and domestic island destinations. The terminal is not really set up for containerised or sizeable break-bulk cargo; industrial freight for Bintan tends to move through Kijang in the island's south-east or via the Batam free-trade zone. Hinterland access is limited to the Riau Islands road network. Forwarders with boxes for the area therefore route through Batam or Singapore. In freight terms, Tanjungpinang is best treated as a ferry and passenger port with limited cargo relevance.
