More than 38 million tonnes of coal moved through the Tanjung Bara terminal at Sangatta in 2023, which is essentially what Tanjung Sangata (ID SGQ) exists to handle. Operated within PT Kaltim Prima Coal's concession, the site receives coal from the open-cut mine via a 13 km overland conveyor and loads it onto capesize bulkers, supplemented by barge-and-floating-crane transhipment offshore. There are no container berths, no break-bulk facilities and no commercial customs gateway for general trade. The hinterland is the mine complex itself, served by private haul roads and the conveyor rather than public road or rail. This is a single-commodity bulk export point, not a multipurpose port. Forwarders with boxed or general cargo for East Kalimantan route instead through Samarinda or the deeper port of Balikpapan.
