Cruise liners and passenger ferries, not container ships, now fill the quays of Tanger Ville (MA TNG), Morocco's largest cruise port. Between late 2008 and 2010 virtually all freight was shifted to the deep-water Tanger Med port some 40 kilometres east, which handled more than 11.1 million TEU in 2025. A yacht marina rounds out the city port's present role. For freight forwarders this means Tanger Ville has no meaningful cargo function: containers, RoRo and breakbulk all move through Tanger Med, among Africa's largest container ports. Regular passenger and car ferries cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Tarifa and Algeciras in Spain, with the complex counting around 3.2 million passengers in 2025. Any shipment bound for northern Morocco should therefore be routed to Tanger Med rather than Tanger Ville.
