Tanzania's second-largest port, Tanga lies on the north coast about 120 km south of the Kenyan border and is managed by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA). It handles general cargo, agricultural products, clinker and petroleum products, and is emerging as an important transit corridor for landlocked countries including Uganda and Rwanda. In the 2025/26 financial year the port significantly exceeded its targets: throughput rose to around 2.7 million tonnes (up from 750,000 tonnes), vessel calls reached 616 against a target of 364 (196%), and Tanzania Revenue Authority collections climbed from TSh 31 billion to TSh 298.7 billion. In October 2025 China's Yantai Port inaugurated a new general cargo route linking East Asia and East Africa, with Tanga as the East African call. Infrastructure plans for 2026/27 include a new 300-metre berth, a dedicated oil-handling berth and a container vessel berth, alongside preparations for a dry port to reduce congestion.
