Up to 90,000 tonnes a day and a 700,000-tonne stockyard: those are the numbers behind Tanah Merah, a coal-only barge-loading terminal in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, feeding output from the Kideco Jaya Agung coal mine and capable of shipping up to 40 million tonnes a year. Loaded barges are towed to the nearby Adang Bay anchorage and transferred onto larger bulk carriers there; Adang Bay itself exported around 21.8 million tonnes of coal in both 2022 and 2023. Tanah Merah handles no containers, breakbulk, or general customs clearance — that role falls to the larger ports of Balikpapan or Samarinda. Access to the terminal runs via dedicated mine haul roads rather than public rail or highway. The Makassar Strait location exists purely to serve Paser's coal-mining hinterland, with no scheduled international liner calls.
