Once a silted-up nineteenth-century treaty port, Tan-Shui has been superseded under UN/LOCODE TW TPE by the modern Port of Taipei at Bali, on the south bank of the Tamsui estuary about 25 kilometres west of the capital. Built to relieve congested Keelung, it handled roughly 1.79 million TEU in 2022 and offers seven container berths with capacity above 2.6 million TEU. The container terminals are run by the Taipei Port Container Terminal Corp — a joint venture of Evergreen, Yang Ming and Wan Hai — alongside Evergreen Marine. Beyond boxes, the port is a significant gateway for vehicle imports on RoRo services and operates a free-trade zone for storage and processing. It serves the densely populated Greater Taipei region, including New Taipei and Taoyuan. The West Coast Expressway (National Highway 61) is the main hinterland artery. For complementary volumes, nearby Keelung plus Kaohsiung and Taichung are the obvious alternatives.
