From the seventeenth century until 1917 Talvik was the leading marketplace of western Finnmark, a busy seafaring settlement on the Altafjord. Those days are long past: the village in Alta municipality now has only very limited freight relevance and no commercial cargo terminal, and it carries no UN/LOCODE. Shippers needing capacity use Alta, the largest cargo port in Finnmark, equipped with mobile cranes, open yards and transit sheds and handling cruise, ferry and cargo traffic. Hammerfest and Tromsø offer further options for wider regional shipments.
