Taltal is best understood as a heritage port rather than a working freight gateway. Around 1900 it ranked among northern Chile's three leading nitrate ports, loading saltpetre, copper and ores from the Atacama interior across several piers. Today its commercial cargo relevance is limited, and the shallow loading pier of roughly five metres rules out larger vessels. For container, breakbulk and bulk shipments, the deep-water ports of Antofagasta and Mejillones, about 200 kilometres north, are the practical choices, while Taltal serves mainly local fishing and small coastal traffic.
