Manganese ore and bauxite power Takoradi, Ghana's second-busiest seaport after Tema: in 2024 it shipped about 4.69 million tonnes of manganese and 1.45 million tonnes of bauxite, lifting total throughput roughly a third to around 9.4 million tonnes. Opened in 1928 as the country's first commercial port, it anchors the resource-rich west and handled around 37% of Ghana's seaborne imports in 2024. On the export side it also moves forest products, bagged cocoa beans and mining equipment, while clinker, wheat, petroleum products and containers come in. Six multipurpose berths plus dedicated manganese, bauxite and oil berths offer draughts of roughly 8.4 to 10 metres and ro-ro capability. Proximity to the offshore Jubilee oil fields has made it a growing supply base for the oil and gas sector. Lines including Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and Grimaldi call here. In January 2026 the MV CBS Years (about 300,000 dwt), the largest bulk carrier ever handled at a West African port, berthed at Takoradi. Road and the rail line to the Tarkwa mining belt connect the western hinterland; for high-volume container liner traffic, Tema and its MPS terminal remain the practical alternative.
