Car ferries and high-speed passenger boats come and go through Takamatsu all day, linking Kagawa's prefectural capital with Seto Inland Sea islands such as Shodoshima and Naoshima and with Uno on Honshu. As a freight gateway the port on Shikoku's north coast is modest, handling around 2,100 TEU and some 57,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Its quays take general-cargo ships, tankers and smaller container vessels, while anchorages accommodate units up to about 40,000 DWT at 10–11 metres draught. Road and rail tie the port into Shikoku's hinterland, but for intercontinental box traffic Takamatsu functions as a feeder rather than a main call. Shippers with real container volumes usually route through Kobe or Osaka, with Mizushima serving regional industrial cargo. For ferry, RoRo and regional breakbulk moves within the Inland Sea, however, Takamatsu is convenient and well connected.
