Grain, logs, cement, coal, chemicals, molasses and steel goods stream in, while food products, timber, textiles, paper and glass go out — Taichung (TW TXG) is Taiwan's second-largest container port and a heavyweight bulk gateway. Operated by the Taiwan International Ports Corporation, it spans roughly 2,900 hectares with 58 wharves and water depths of 9 to 18 metres. Eight berths handle containers (around 1.7 million TEU a year), nine deal with dry bulk and breakbulk, and two further terminals take liquid bulk such as chemicals and fuels. Total annual throughput reaches about 64.8 million tonnes. A free-trade zone supports processing and re-export, and the port serves the industrialised core of central Taiwan around Taichung city. Motorways and rail links carry cargo inland. For the largest deep-sea container volumes, Kaohsiung in the south and Keelung in the north remain stronger, but for bulk and project cargo in central Taiwan, Taichung is hard to bypass.
