Coal from the Donets Basin, steel, iron and timber for export, with building materials and general cargo inbound, make up the trade of Taganrog (RU TAG), a small multipurpose port on the Sea of Azov in Russia. Founded by Peter the Great in 1698 and long a grain-exporting harbour, it now handles around 2.9 million tonnes a year. Shallow depths of only about 3–5 m limit it to smaller coasters, with access to open water through the Kerch Strait. The Rostov-region hinterland is connected by road and rail. Forwarders should note that shipping on the Sea of Azov has been heavily disrupted since 2022 by the Russia–Ukraine conflict and Western sanctions on Russian ports.
