Around 1.35 million tonnes of cargo, some 10,000 TEU and close to two million passengers pass through Tacloban each year. Set on the west coast of Leyte, the port is the base of the largest Port Management Office in the Visayas district and a key gateway for the Eastern Visayas region. Globalport Terminals has run operations since November 2021, offering RoRo and LoLo services; there are, however, no dedicated container facilities, so boxes are lifted by ship or mobile crane and held in open storage. Copra is the leading export, while domestic trades and fishing shape day-to-day traffic. A channel depth of about 4.9 m limits the size of calling vessels. For international container or deep-draught cargo, shippers route through Cebu or Manila.
