Once the German Swinemünde, Świnoujście sits at the mouth of the Świna where it opens onto the Baltic. Its ferry terminal — the largest in Poland — links the town with the Swedish ports of Ystad and Trelleborg through operators such as Unity Line, Polferries, TT-Line and Euroafrica, running up to twelve daily sailings dominated by accompanied and unaccompanied RoRo traffic. Alongside the ferries, Gaz-System operates an LNG import terminal that is being extended for export and bunkering. A standalone deep-water container terminal is planned but not yet in service, so pure box traffic currently routes elsewhere. Świnoujście and Szczecin form a single port complex with rail and road links into the Polish and Czech hinterland. Shippers with containers usually turn to Gdańsk, with its deep-water terminal, or to Gdynia.
