Eastern Indonesia's trade runs largely through Tanjung Perak, the port of Surabaya on the Java Sea and the country's second-busiest container gateway after Tanjung Priok. In 2024 it handled 3.89 million TEU across more than twenty berths serving container, general-cargo and bulk operations. The container core is Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS), owned 51% by the state operator Pelindo and 49% by DP World. It is complemented by Teluk Lamong, a semi-automated green-port terminal running since 2014 that moved around 817,000 TEU. Through the first nine months of 2025, TPS's international box volumes held nearly flat at about 1.12 million TEU, up 0.66% year on year. The hinterland is East Java's dense industrial belt, connected mainly by road and to a lesser extent by rail. Cargo spans containers including reefers, breakbulk and project loads, plus dry and liquid bulk. Customs and import-export clear through Indonesia's Bea Cukai authority, with its established pre-arrival document checks. For central or western Indonesia, shippers turn to Tanjung Priok near Jakarta, while Surabaya is the natural hub for the eastern archipelago.
