3.89 million TEU moved through Tanjung Perak, the port of Surabaya (ID SUB), in 2024, making it Indonesia's second-busiest container gateway after Tanjung Priok and the main outlet for the eastern half of the archipelago. The container core is Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS), owned 51 percent by state operator Pelindo and 49 percent by DP World, which handles roughly 83 percent of the port's international boxes. By July 2026 TPS had taken delivery of four electric quay cranes and fourteen electric rubber-tyred gantries under a Pelindo modernisation programme covering Tanjung Perak and Belawan. Berth productivity averaged 51 boxes per ship-hour in early 2026, above the transport ministry's 48-box minimum, and container flows rose 11.79 percent in July 2026. Alongside TPS, the semi-automated Teluk Lamong terminal has run to green-port standards since 2014. More than twenty berths take containers and reefers, breakbulk, project cargo and both dry and liquid bulk. The hinterland is East Java's dense industrial belt, reached mainly by road with limited rail, and the government is pushing Tanjung Perak as a transshipment location. Customs and import-export clear through Indonesia's Bea Cukai authority with its pre-arrival document checks. Shippers serving central or western Indonesia use Tanjung Priok near Jakarta instead.
