No box ship calls at Superior: this is a bulk port whose business is moving heavy raw materials across the Great Lakes, and in 2025 it did so at a reduced pace. Together with neighbouring Duluth it forms the Duluth-Superior complex, still the largest tonnage port on the Lakes despite waterborne volumes falling 14.6% to about 25.3 million short tons in 2025. For containerised cargo, shippers route via the coasts by rail or through Montreal rather than the Great Lakes.
