At around 390,000 tonnes a year, Hydro's Sunndal works is Europe's largest primary aluminium smelter, and its quay at the head of Sunndalsfjord exists to serve it. The port is an industrial works berth: it takes in raw materials such as alumina and anodes and ships out aluminium ingots, extrusion billets and foundry alloys. It is not a common-user container or general-cargo facility — flows are bulk and heavy-lift tied to aluminium production. Water depth in the fjord exceeds 20 m, letting ocean-going cargo ships berth directly at the plant. Inland movement is by road; there is no rail line to Sunndalsøra, the nearest railheads lying further inland around Oppdal and Dombås. Containerised freight for the Møre og Romsdal region is handled instead at Kristiansund, Molde or Ålesund.
