State energy company Pertamina runs Sungaigerong as part of its Plaju–Sungai Gerong refining complex (Refinery Unit III) on the Musi River in South Sumatra. The site is a dedicated tanker and petroleum-products port — its roughly 18 berths handle fuel oil, low-sulphur fuel oil and refined products, not containers or general cargo. Ocean-going tankers reach the quays via the Musi, which is navigable for seagoing vessels below Palembang and meets the Bangka Strait some 80 km downstream. Hinterland distribution relies on road links and river craft toward Palembang rather than rail. Forwarders moving boxed or palletised freight for the region should route through Boom Baru in Palembang, with Panjang (Bandar Lampung) and Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) as larger container alternatives. Customs clearance for commercial cargo is handled at those gateways, not at the refinery jetties.
