Crude oil and natural gas – not boxes or break-bulk – are what move through Sullom Voe, one of the largest oil terminals in Europe. Set at the northern tip of Shetland, the terminal takes hydrocarbons by pipeline from the East Shetland Basin and the deep waters west of Shetland, then stabilises, stores and loads them onto tankers bound for refineries worldwide. It is operated by EnQuest, and a new stabilisation and gas-export facility came on stream in early 2025. The deep approach, around 22 metres, lets large laden crude tankers berth at its jetties. This is purely an energy export terminal; for container, general or project cargo in Shetland, Lerwick is the commercial port to use.
