About 140 kilometres separate Sulina (RO SUL), at the only Danube branch deep enough for sea-going ships, from Constanța, the Romanian mega-port where grain shipped down the Danube from Ukraine's river ports of Izmail and Reni is transferred onto larger ocean vessels. From May 2026 Romania has been building a new port area in the Sulina Free Zone, targeted for a summer 2026 opening as an additional transshipment point for Ukrainian grain and reconstruction cargo. Record-low water levels on the lower Danube periodically restrict draft and slow barge traffic through the corridor. Current quay infrastructure remains modest, with a pier depth of 4.9 metres, and the navigation channel is kept open through continuous dredging by Romania's Lower Danube River Administration. For larger container volumes, Constanța remains the region's principal port of call.
